E-Tolls stay‚ but will be cheaper: From R450 to R225

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the unpopular user-pays e-toll system is here to stay – but fees will be cut in half.

A monthly cap for light motor vehicles will be reduced from R450 to R225.

He also announced that e-toll fees will be linked to licence renewals – so that motorists cannot get their car discs unless they’ve paid their e-toll bills.

A tariff for light motor vehicles has been reduced from 58c/kilometer to 30c/kilometer

The capped prices will apply to all motorists whether in possession of an etag or not.

In announcing the revised etolls repayment method, Ramaphosa confirmed that the etolls are here to stay and that all the previously unpaid bills will have to be settled.

“Current outstanding fees will be discounted by 60%. Users will have 6 months in which to settle debt from Dec 2013.,” said Ramaphosa.

He said that motorists will not be able to renew their license disc if they have an outstanding bill.

There will be a standardised 50% discount for all paying motorists.

“Those that visit Gauteng and pass through the gantries less than 30 times per annum will be exempt,” he said.

Buses and taxis with registered permits will be exempted from paying for the tolls.

“This new dispensation demonstrates that we are a listening and caring govt,” he said.
