The SABC has poured ice-cold water on the reports that there might be a crisis at the Setswana station Motsweding FM.

This comes after senior staff members including top DJs and a station manager left for a rival station North West FM.

Modisane Modise who commanded over 1.2million listenership, Douglas Mosadi who had over 800 000 listeners, Sekgale Mokgotsi, Mukupi Molebatsi and station manager Sibongile Mtyali all left Motsweding FM.

“As far as I am concerned there is no crisis, all I know is that Douglas resigned,” SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said.

“The only person they took is Sekgale Mokgotsi.”

He explained that Mosadi was not fired and did not lodge any kind of grievance against anyone at the station.

Kganyago also said that Mosadi did not give the station any ultimatum in terms of salary demands or slot changes.

“He officially resigned with immediate effect last week. We got an enquiry about Douglas leaving the station for North West FM and we said ‘as far as we are concerned Douglas is still with us.”

“And then the station manager from North West FM confirmed that he was coming to North West FM on the 1st of June.”

“We then wrote to him to say ‘are you going or are you staying? We need to know’ it is only then that he tendered his resignation with immediate effect,” explained Kganyago.

According to the SABC there is nothing wrong with DJs joining rival radio stations.

“In every radio station people come and go, it does not only happen to Motsweding. People come and go, whether it’s Metro or anywhere else. This is the nature of the industry and once someone leaves they need somewhere to go.”

Kganyago said that the award winning radio host Mosadi is, without a doubt, one of the best radio DJs.

“We cannot run from the reality that Douglas is a good DJ but if he decides on his own to go to another radio station we can’t stop him from doing it because he resigned to say that he was going to that station.”

Kganyago said the station will have to decide on who will permanently takeover Mosadi’s slot.
