Health minister wants a name for youth app

The health minister wants young people to come up with a catchy title for an mobile app aimed at providing information‚ tools and support for them.

Dr Aaron Motsoaledi announced the launch of a naming competition for the as yet unreleased app during a press briefing at Wednesday’s Consultation on the UN Secretary-General’s 2016 — 2030 Global Strategy for Women’s‚ Children’s and Adolescents’ Health.

Tools on the app include information on sexual health and answers to frequently asked questions that teens may have.

These would include questions about how to go about getting contraception as well as where to go.

“Sometimes you find that a young person goes to a clinic for family planning and they are asked to come back with a parent‚” said Motsoaledi.

“How many of you in this room told your parents about the first time you had sex?”

The competition will run from Wednesday until May 31‚ and is open to all youth aged 10 to 24.

Entrants will also be required to provide ideas for the kind of content they would like to see as well as topics for live chats that they would like to engage in via the app.

The winners will be announced at the end of June when the app is launched.

Wednesday’s briefing took place at Emperors Palace‚ east of Johannesburg.
