Benni McCarthy targeted in a gunpoint robbery

Former Bafana Bafana star Benni McCarthy was robbed at gunpoint on Tuesday while getting a haircut in Rosebank.

It has been reported that McCarthy was deliberately targeted during the robbery just hours after landing at the OR Tambo International Airport.

According to KickOff magazine, three armed men walked into the barbershop and told McCarthy to give away his belongings including a wrist watch, wedding ring, wallet and his famous diamond earring before fleeing the scene in a black BMW 3-series.

A source was quoted on the website saying: “Three armed men walked into J's Classic Barbershop, one stood at the door to hold guard, another kept the in-store customers under control while one walked straight up to Benni and requested his watch, earrings and his wedding ring.”

It appears there were about nine people in the hair salon when the criminals got in but did not rob any of the other people.

“The guys did not bother any of the other customers and went specifically after Benni as if they had been monitoring his movements,” said the unnamed source.

EWN confirmed that no shots were fired even though the men were clearly armed.

““He was pointing the gun in his face the whole time and he kept telling him to hurry up,” said McCarthy’s manager Percy Adams.
