The Congress Student’s Movement has one question for Wits University’s SRC president Mcebo Dlamini: “What was he smoking?”

Dlamini prompted outrage earlier this week when he wrote “I love Adolf Hitler” in a Facebook post.

He later told the Wits student newspaper‚ Vuvuzela: “What I love about Hitler is his charisma and his capabilities to organise people. We need more leaders of such calibre.”

Dlamini’s comments will incite violence and unnecessarily increase religious tensions amongst students.

“For anyone to see any good in Hitler‚ the vilest of all dictators‚ is outrageous‚ irresponsible and stupid‚” Khotso Mofokeng‚ the acting general of the Congress of the People’s student arm‚ said on Wednesday.

“Dlamini’s comments will incite violence and unnecessarily increase religious tensions amongst students.”

Mofokeng demanded that Dlamini make a public apology and fully retract the statement before the university fraternity and the people of our country.

Universities must encourage robust debate‚ Mofokeng said‚ but they should require rationality to prevail at all times.

Reckless remarks such as Dlamini’s‚ Mofokeng said‚ go against the grain of this type of intelligent discourse.

“We cannot tolerate such incendiary statements in our democratic dispensation‚” Mofokeng said.

“For this stupidity to come close on the heels of xenophobia is just too difficult to comprehend. What madness is afflicting our people? Why are we so keen on becoming the skunks of the world again?”

The university’s vice-chancellor‚ Professor Adam Habib‚ said Dlamini’s statements were deeply offensive‚ and added that the matter has been referred to Wits’ legal office to see whether disciplinary charges can be pursued.
