Alleged Libode cop killers nabbed

Four men suspected of brutally killing a Libode policeman and seriously injuring another during a botched armed robbery were arrested on Friday morning.

They were picked up when a Hawks-led task team swooped on a village near Qumbu at 3am.

Mthatha police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said four suspects aged between 24 and 25 had been “positively” linked to the killing.

The suspects were expected to appear the Libode Magistrates court on Friday.

They face counts of murder‚ attempted murder‚ robbery and malicious damage to property‚ said Fatyela.

He said police were opposed to bail as the hunt for more suspects continued.

Warrant Officer Mlungiseleli Dukuza‚ a 55-year-old father of six‚ and Constable Mluleki Madolo‚ 40‚ were ambushed four weeks ago by a large group of robbers who raked them with gunfire while hiding on the roof of the Libode post office.

Dukuza was rushed to the Mthatha hospital‚ where he died.

Madolo‚ who was seriously injured during the fierce gun battle‚ is recovering in hospital.
