Soldiers deployed into Alexandra to help police

The acting head of crime intelligence General Bongiwe Zulu has contradicted Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega’s assertion that there are sufficient officers to control the xenophobic violence‚ the paper reports.

The military will be deployed in Alexandra to assist police in stopping the attacks on foreign nationals‚ Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said on Tuesday.

General Zulu on Tuesday stunned Parliament’s police committee after he said there was intelligence of impending violence following King Goodwill Zwelithini’s remarks on foreign nationals two weeks ago‚ but there were not enough police on the streets to act on it.

This was in sharp contrast to General Phiyega’s view that police were deployed in sufficient numbers and that was why the situation was now stable.
