About 200 Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members and locals gathered opposite Alexandra women’s hostel where the party’s leader Julius Malema was due to address the crowd following the brutal murder of Mozambique national Emmanuel Sithole on Saturday.

Sithole was beaten and stabbed in full view of community members at the township’s 2nd avenue.

He was taken to Edenvale Hospital‚ where he later died. His murder comes after the country had been experiencing xenophobic attacks which began three weeks ago in KwaZulu-Natal and spread to Johannesburg.

Sithole’s attackers were arrested on Sunday night and are expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

However‚ Gauteng police have not linked his death to the xenophobic attacks.

A group of EFF members marched between Selbon‚ 4th and 3rd streets‚ singing struggle songs and carrying placards condemning xenophobic attacks.

Some placards read: “I’m also a kwerekwere‚ so what? Blood Suckers”‚ “Away with Xenophobia” #XenophobiaMustFall.”

Alexandra resident and EFF member Mapule Thipe says she is part of the gathering to show support to foreign nationals.

“We are all human beings and we deserve to live. If there is a problem let’s fix it and not kill each other‚” said Thipe.

Others who were in attendance called for President Jacob Zuma to show leadership and stop the senseless killing of foreign nationals.
