Khoi leaders in Port Elizabeth have joined the Rhodes Must Fall Campaign and are demanding the removal of the imposing marble statue of Queen Victoria in front of the City’s Main Library.

They are lobbying for it to be replaced by their forgotten chief Dawid Stuurman.

The call comes on the hot heels of prominent city politicians who made renewed calls at the weekend for the removal of all monuments and statues reminiscent of colonialism apartheid‚ amidst the countrywide protest started by University of Cape Town students who demanded the removal of the statue of Cecil John Rhodes.

Dressed in traditional attire and burning incense‚ paramount chief Gert Steenkamp of Khoi handed over a petition to Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal spokesman Roland Williams‚ who accepted it on behalf of the mayor Ben Fihla.
