Gauteng schools to offer Mandarin as official language

Department of Education has approved Mandarin as part of the school curriculum.

Pupils will now have an opportunity to take the Chinese language as part of their official school subjects.

According to Destiny Connect, the decision to include Mandarin as an official subject was influenced by the fact that China is the country’s “biggest trading partner”.

Starting in January 2016, pupils in grades 4 to matric will have an option to take Mandarin as a second language.

The talks of adding a Chinese language to South African school curriculum emerged in 2014 after Minister Angie Motshekga and Ministry of Education in China signed an implementation agreement.

“There are currently six Confucius institutions in South Africa and with the help of the Chinese Government a curriculum for the teaching of Chinese will be developed to be offered in some schools around the country,” said Motshekga.

Mandarin will first be offered in few selected schools in Gauteng beginning of 2016.

The selected schools are: Chipa-Tabane Secondary School, Ekangala Secondary School, Gekobineerde Skool Culinan, Constatiakloop Primary School, Dainfern College, Lesedi Secondary School, and Kutumela-Molefi Intermediary Farm School.
