Paramedics robbed while on duty

WESTERN Cape paramedics were robbed of their cellphones and a GPS in one of the Cape Town townships yesterday.

ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak confirmed the incident.

He said shortly after midnight an ER24 ambulance and rapid response vehicle were dispatched to a house in Site B, Khayelitsha, for a five-year-old girl who was suffering from seizures.

Three paramedics were busy in the ambulance stabilising the girl when one of the doors was flung open and a gun was pointed at them.

The mother of the child was in the ambulance at the time.

"Two suspects, believed to be in their 20s, demanded cellphones and wallets.

"One of the them asked for the rapid response vehicle key," said Vermaak.

While the paramedics were held at gunpoint in the ambulance, the second suspect went to the rapid response vehicle with the key.

He used the key to open the vehicle that was locked at the time, which activated the emergency sirens.

Vermaak said both suspects then fled.

They took with them the cellphones and GPS from the ambulance.

The paramedics continued their care of the girl and transported her to Khayelitsha District Hospital.

Vermaak said a case of armed robbery has been opened.

No one was injured in the incident, he added.

Police spokesman Frederick van Wyk confirmed the incident and that a case was opened.

No arrests have been made.

Van Wyk said police were investigating the incident.
