Drugs worth R16m seized at airport

Drugs with an estimated street value of R16 million were seized at OR Tambo International Airport at the weekend, the SA Revenue Service said on Monday.

A man travelling from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Lagos, Nigeria via Johannesburg was found in possession of 6.7 kilograms of cocaine --hidden in jam tins -- with an estimated street value of R1.7 million on Sunday, Sars spokeswoman Marika Muller said in a statement.

A woman with a connecting flight to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo was found in possession of more than 16.8 kilograms of cocaine concealed in her handbags.

The cocaine had an estimated street value of R4.8 million, Muller said.

On Friday evening, a man travelling from Cotonou, Benin was found in possession of three bags each holding a large plastic "jerry can" (fuel container) with small packets of liquid ecstasy totalling 30 litres inside it.

The drugs had an estimated street value of R9 million, Muller said.
