North West man gets 20 years for raping boy

A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Bloemhof Regional Court for raping a boy in 2011, North West police said on Monday.

The boy, who was nine at the time, was assaulted and raped by the man on November 27, 2011, said Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone in a statement.

The boy told his mother about the incident and the matter was reported to police.

The man made his first appearance on December 14, 2011, and was sentenced on Thursday.

Provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Zukiswa Mbombo welcomed the sentence.

"We are delighted to secure this sentence and hope that it will send a clear message that we are serious about the fight against crime, especially crimes against women and children," she said.
