Man gets nine life sentences for raping children

A man has been sentenced to nine life sentences for raping his lover's children, in a judgment handed down by the High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in Palm Ridge, The Star reported on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old man from Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, repeatedly raped a 12-year-old girl, and her 10-year-old sister once.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and later claimed he was in a consensual relationship with the 12-year-old.

Judge Eben Jordaan dismissed his claim as "absolute nonsense", saying a child could not give consent for sex and this was an indication that he had no remorse for his actions.

Jordaan said the children's mother worked long hours to provide for all of them, including the accused who was unemployed.

"But she left the children at home with a snake because the older [girl] was raped on eight occasions and the younger one once. The manner in which it happened is despicable. To prevent the neighbours from hearing as he raped them, he would turn on the radio and TV loud."

The accused also banned the children from playing with other children, and locked their bedroom with a padflock and chain at night.
