Universities to consider applications delayed by Post Office strike

The crippling three-month long Post Office strike which took place at the end of last year will not have an affect on university applications; this is according to the Department of Higher Education.

The department’s spokesperson Khaye Nkwanyane has assured matriculants who applied through the Post Office before or during the strike that their applications will be considered by the different varsities.

“We met with different vice-chancellors and agreed that applications that got stuck due to the strike must be taken.

“So these late applications will be considered because it was not their fault that there was a strike at the Post Office,” said Nkwanyane.

He said that ‘chancers’ will be identified since there will be a postal stamp on the applications and only the documents that were sent before the deadline will be considered.

“It indicates exactly when the application was sent. So this is a non-issue now,” he said.

Nkwanyane said that the universities have already started processing the late postal applications and University of South Africa (Unisa) has already processed over 23 000 late applications.

Nkwanyane reiterated that universities would not be accepting any walk-in applicants.
