THERE was a collective gasp of disbelief as Durban assistant train driver Roxi Wardman was announced as MasterChefSA winner at a live broadcast of the reality cooking show at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg last night .

The 26-year-old narrowly beat crowd favourite Siphokazi Mdlankomo, 38, a Cape Town domestic worker, to win the coveted title in a pulsating cook-off.

Wardman overcame a stiff challenge from the equally determined Mdlankomo, who stumbled on the last hurdle during a spectacular two-hour culinary extravaganza.

The pair went toe-to-toe for the last time in the MasterChef SA kitchen for a marathon three-challenge showdown, cheered on by among others all their fellow top 12 contestants.

Each challenge was scored by the judges.

Wardman won the first and the last challenge, while Mdlankomo consoled herself with just one win.

Apart from the bragging rights of MasterChef SA, Wardman also won over R1-million worth of prizes including a whopping R500000 cash and a VW Tiguan.

Mdlankomo, as a runner-up, took home R100000.

"I feel humbled by the whole experience, it took me by surprise," gushed Wardman.

She resigned from her train-driving job to realise her dream of cooking professionally.

A visibly disappointed Mdlankomo vowed to make a return. "This is not the end, it's just the beginning. Watch this space. We were gunning for the top spot," she said.

Mdlankomo indicated that she wanted to continue with cooking on television as well as establishing a cooking academy for domestic workers, whom she called her role models.
