Man jailed for slashing ex-lover

An Mpumalanga man found guilty of attacking the mother of his three children with a slasher, leaving her paralysed, has been handed a seven-year imprisonment sentence.

The convict, Isaac Maphanga, 31, from Mataffin near Mbombela, was sentenced in the Nelspruit Regional Court on Thursday, a Sapa correspondent reported.

He was arrested on April 7, 2013, after chopping his ex-wife, Thandi Balukile Molapo, with a slasher.

He had pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted murder.

Molapo, who has three children with Maphanga, sustained lacerations to her head and both hands. She is surviving on a disability grant and is unable to use her left hand.

Magistrate Vanessa Joubert found Maphanga guilty of attempted murder.

She said the court was satisfied with evidence from Emily Mnisi, a witness of the 2013 incident.

Joubert said Maphanga and Molapo were no longer living together when he attacked her.

She said Maphanga accused Molapo of misusing R1000 he gave her for buying clothes and food for their children.

"You are sentenced to seven years' imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm," said Joubert.
