Former Cape Town city councillor Andile Lili's claim that the ANC's Western Cape leadership was involved in his shooting is "irresponsible", the party in the province said on Friday.

"The ANC unequivocally rejects the irresponsible statements made by Andile Lili that accuses the ANC leadership... of directly or indirectly being involved and or responsible for his unfortunate shooting incident," African National Congress provincial secretary Songezo Mjongile said in a statement.

If he knew who was responsible for the shooting, he should tell the police, the party said.

According to the Cape Argus on Friday, Lili claimed a senior provincial ANC member planned his assassination at a Gugulethu pub the night before he was shot.

However, the member, whose name was known to the paper, rejected the claim.

Lili reportedly accused the ANC member of hiring two hitmen who shot at him four times.

As Lili emerged from hospital on Thursday he was met by an enthusiastic crowd of about 500 supporters, the newspaper reported, adding that he told them about the night of the shooting and said he could identify the two men involved.

He also was quoted as saying a senior ANC member and others had spent the evening before the shooting "sitting at Corner Lounge discussing my killing, the whole night".

Lili reportedly claimed that earlier on the day of the shooting the senior member had held a press conference, accusing Ses'khona of sending threatening smses.

"[He] said he had ways of dealing with the alleged threatening smses that he had received from Ses'khona. Once you utter that statement you must be perceived as the prime suspect," Lili was quoted as saying.
