The police ministry on Thursday confirmed that Minister Nathi Nhleko was facing a lawsuit by musician Khuli Chana.
"We know about it. It's there with our legal team," Nhleko's spokesman Musa Zondi said.
The Star newspaper reported that Chana was bringing three claims totalling R2.3 million.
Chana, real name Khulane Morule, 32, wants the minister to pay for the emotional trauma and suffering police officers put him through when they shot him in October last year, according to the paper.
The case against two police officers, Mduduzi Mfundisi Nzuza and Sam Baloyi, who were accused of shooting Chana, was withdrawn in the Randburg Magistrate's Court in September.
The officers allegedly shot at the award-winning musician's car when he failed to stop at a roadblock they had set up at a petrol station on the N1 in Midrand on October 28. Chana was wounded in the hand and back.
At the time of the shooting, police were searching for a group of men who had kidnapped a Bedfordview businessman. The ransom money was to have been left at the petrol station. The officers apparently mistook Chana's car for that of the kidnappers. A police officer has since been arrested and charged with the kidnapping.
According to The Star, Chana's first claim is for R1.5m for the unlawful shooting. He said it left him with "permanent scarring and disfigurement", emotional trauma, psychological stress and shock, future medical expenses, and future loss of earning capacity.
In the second claim, Chana wants the minister to pay R516,638 for "maliciously" claiming he "tried to kill them with his motor vehicle" and instituting an attempted murder case against him.
The case was terminated in September when the director of public prosecutions declined to prosecute Chana following a public apology tendered by the police, and the withdrawal of charges against Nzuza and Baloyi.
Chana's last claim is reportedly for R250,000. This was for statements by a police spokesman who allegedly defamed Chana and injured his reputation by suggesting the musician was guilty of criminal conduct for attempting to kill police.
