A suspected rhino poacher was shot and wounded in the Phinda Private Game Reserve in Hluhluwe, KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Tuesday.

He was among three people arrested after a shoot-out with police inside the reserve on Monday, Major Thulani Zwane said.

They were spotted entering the reserve around 4.30pm. When the police approached them the suspected poachers fired shots at the police who returned fire.

One suspect was wounded and taken to hospital under police guard, Zwane said.

"He was found in possession of a 308 hunting rifle with five live rounds. The other suspects were also arrested and found in possession of [an] axe."

The three, aged between 31 and 55, would appear in the Hluhluwe Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges of illegal hunting of rhino and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
