MEMBERS of the South African National Defence Force were called in to control a crowd that had gathered outside Musina Police Station on Friday morning.

The gathering follows rumours that two men were nabbed by the police at the Beit Bridge border post allegedly in connection with the murder of popular goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa on Sunday.

Three people, including a senior officer at the Musina police station, told Sowetan that ordinary residents of the border town had to be forced away from the police where they had gathered to catch a glimpse of the two men.

"The two guys were caught by SARS officials at the border while they were busy processing their passports. SARS phoned the police who promptly took the two men for questioning at Musina police station," an official told Sowetan.

"Then people of Musina started gathering outside the police. The army had to drive them away. The two men suspected of killing Senzo did not stay long at the station because it was getting tense.

"They were taken to Polokwane in a police BMW," the official added.

Musina police spokeswoman Constable Dakalo Ramagwede refused to comment on why the army personnel, a significant number of police officers and more than 100 residents of Musina were roaming in and outside the police station. Ramagwede referred all media queries to provincial police.

Limpopo provincial police spokeswoman Colonel Ronnel Otto downplayed rumours of an arrest.

"As far as we know, there was no arrest in the province," Otto said, before referring  Sowetan to national police spokespeople.

Gauteng police spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila also denied an arrest was made and did not comment any further.

Police have been on a manhunt for two male suspects who are most wanted in connection with the shooting of superstar goalkeeper Meyiwa at his girlfriend singer Kelly Khumalo's family house in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg on Sunday.

An amount of R250 000 has been offered to anyone with information that may lead to the succesfull arrest and conviction of suspects linked to Meyiwa's murder.

Meyiwa will be laid to rest at Heroes Acre at the Chesterville cemetery in Durban on Saturday.
