ANC MP Jackson Mthembu was discharged from hospital on Wednesday morning following treatment after he was shot in a robbery, the ruling party said.

Mthembu left the Emalahleni Private Hospital where he had spent 10 days since being shot on October 19, spokesman Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.

The armed man and three accomplices then went to Mthembu's car. Four of Mthembu's friends were waiting in the car. They robbed Mthembu and his friends of their money and cellphones.

"In the 10 days of his admission at the hospital he had spent a total of seven days in the intensive care unit where he had undergone numerous tests, scans, treatment and medical observation," Kodwa said.

Kodwa said the African National Congress was relieved at the progress Mthembu had made. The bullet that struck him pierced his lung, broke two ribs, and exited through his back.

"His internal injuries caused internal bleeding and formation of a blood clot near his left shoulder," Kodwa said.

He had difficulty breathing due to the injury to his lung. He was booked off work until the end of November.
