Thai shrine cleared of sex toys

A shrine in Thailand has been cleared of its phallic offerings, including a number of sex toys, in a bid to clean up its image, a report said Monday.

The cave shrine to a local sea goddess had become associated with fertility in recent years, as locals hoping to boost virility or conceive left carved phalluses as offerings, and later sex toys.

But the increasing clutter of sex paraphernalia was ruining the shrine's reputation, officials of the national park of the Marine National Park of Krabi island told Khaosod newspaper.

Thailand is home to a few Hindu-based fertility shrines where wooden lingam, or phalluses, are worshipped or offered up in a great variety of sizes. But actual sex toys are illegal in the country.

The cave on Krabi has since been cleared of the offending items so that visitors may now worship in peace, the report said.
