AS RESIDENTS of Kya Sands, north of Johannesburg, begin picking up the pieces of their lives which were shattered by a fire that gutted more than 1200 shacks, some schoolchildren will have to bear the nightmare a little longer.

Their books and uniforms were destroyed in the blaze.

Grade 6 pupil Katlego Molato from Witkoppen Primary School in Fourways said last week all his notes, textbooks and uniform were burnt .

"There is nothing I can do. I just have to work extra hard these remaining weeks to secure my space in the next grade," he said.

Prince Mogale, from the same school, said he was relieved the fire had not erupted at night. "Imagine if the fire had exploded at night. We would probably not have come out alive. I know I don't have books now, but I'll make do with whatever material I get."

Gauteng department of education spokeswoman Phumla Sekhonyane said the department has asked organisations working on site to compile a list of affected pupils as well as their needs.

She said the department would provide textbooks and catch-up lessons.

"We have also asked the department of social development to provide learners with school uniforms," she said.

Human settlements MEC Jacob Mamabolo said 600 temporary housing units would be erected as the first phase and people would be relocated.
