The Road Accident Fund (RAF) has begun assisting the families of those affected by a multi-vehicle pile-up on the N12 near Alberton in Gauteng, which left four people dead, the Saturday Star reported.

The RAF reportedly assisted the families with burial arrangements. hospital stays and counselling.

Eugene Watson, RAF's chief executive said the fund would support the families of the deceased by covering basic funeral expenses before claims were lodged.

"We wish to extend our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and a speedy recovery to the injured. Road safety is a collective responsibility of all road users and it is imperative that we all play our part in reducing accidents," he was quoted as saying.

Isaac Wade Moruding, the driver of the truck that ploughed into almost 50 cars on Tuesday was arrested the next day.

At least 16 people were injured in the accident.

He appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Thursday and would appear again on October 22.
