It can no longer be business as usual for the ANC, the party's head of policy Jeff Radebe said on Monday.

"[At the national general council (NGC)] we will review all the resolutions taken at our last conference, starting mainly with [the] strategy and tactics document," he said at a briefing on the party's NGC.

The strategy and tactics document sets out the ANC's future plans.

"It can no longer be business as usual; we need to turn the corner."

The African National Congress will hold its NGC in June next year. The conference takes place 30 months after its last conference in Mangaung in 2012.

Radebe said the main issue would deal with "monopoly capital".

"How far have we moved to make sure monopoly capital is not a dominant factor?"

The country's economy was lagging behind, he said.

"It's about placing the economy on a qualitative different path.

"We believe our target of five percent [growth] can be achieved," Radebe said.

Certain measures needed to be put in place.

He said the youth had to play a critical role which it was not doing at the moment.

Many youth in the country were still unemployed.

The ANC also wanted to make sure the private sector played its role. Seventy percent of production and employment rested with the private sector.

Radebe said the ANC government wanted to increase the level of investment in the country to 25 percent of GDP and reduce unemployment, among other things.

"This can't happen if we are not co-ordinated. The ANC government... must be held to account, not only to the ANC but to all people of South Africa," he said.

"Our people have to be focused."
