Kruger National Park fires now under control

Four fires in the Kruger National Park have been contained, SANParks said on Friday.

"Following the raging fires in the Kruger National Park that lasted for over a week, SA National Parks can confirm that all four fires are contained," said spokesman Reynold Thakhuli.

SANParks conservation staff and Working on Fire teams were managing the fires and extinguishing potential new fires.

The blaze started on Friday last week when a runaway fire crossed the border from Mozambique into the park.

No infrastructure was damaged. Two young giraffe and possibly a rhino were injured by the fire.

Thakhuli urged visitors to exercise caution when approaching burnt areas, particularly between Phabeni and Skukuza.

"Visitors are also urged to report any fire sightings to the nearest camp or gate and refrain from starting more."

"Area surveillance is currently underway to determine if there are other casualties," he said.
