Joburg water problem fixed, some areas still dry

Some parts of Johannesburg were still experiencing water cuts on Tuesday evening, Johannesburg Water said.

This was after electricity problems at Randwater's Eikenhof pump station caused interruptions to the water supply.

"Randwater has fixed their power problem, but the reservoirs [fed by the pump station] were so dry and still have to fill up," spokeswoman Millicent Kabwe said.

"Johannesburg Water... would like to inform residents fed by Crown Gardens, Waterfall, Linden and Quellerina towers, Hursthill and Honeydew reservoirs of the water shortages currently experienced in some areas."

Residents in these areas who did have water supply were asked to use it sparingly to give the reservoirs a chance to fill up.

Water tanks would be placed in the affected areas as a temporary measure.

The tanks would be placed at:

- Coronationville Hospital

- Corner of Rifle Range and Limerick streets, Crown Gardens

- Shoprite on the corner of Gibson and Edward Streets, Sophiatown

- Woolworths on the corner of 14th Avenue and Weltevreden Road, Quellerina

- Spar on the corner of Bergbron Drive and Gordon Road, Bergbron

- Corner Woodgreen and Angela Baltimore Streets, Winchester Hills

- Campus Square corner Kingsway Avenue and Main Road, Auckland Park.

Johannesburg Water apologised for the inconvenience caused.

On its Twitter account on Monday, Johannesburg Water blamed Eskom for the problem at the Eikenhof pump station.

"Please note that Randwater is experiencing electrical failure in their Eikenhof pump station due to Eskom and thus cannot supply water," it tweeted.

Eskom denied this in a statement on Tuesday.

"Eskom would like to confirm that the electricity supply problem was not as a result of any issue on Eskom's network as was communicated to communities.

"Eskom has engaged with both Joburg Water and City Power to resolve the matter, as this is in the jurisdiction of City Power."
