Armed robberies in Northgate and Maponya Mall

Two malls in Johannesburg were the target of armed robberies on Monday, Gauteng police said.

Both incidents happened around 9am, at the Maponya mall in Soweto and Northgate mall.

Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said at Maponya mall, police were looking for six suspects.

"It's alleged that two security guards went inside the mall to collect money. As they were walking inside the mall, they were confronted by a man who pointed a firearm at them, and [he] took the money in bags that the guards were holding."

The man left the mall, meeting another man at the entrance who fired a shot.

"Then the suspects ran away, and were joined by four others. They fled in a grey car with unknown registration numbers. No one was injured."

Police did not want to reveal the shop where the money came from as it was part of the investigation.

Dlamini said at Northgate mall, two men robbed a cellphone shop.

"The manager was forced into the back office, where they took money and cellphones and they fled. No shots were fired. No one was injured. We've launched a manhunt for these two suspects."
