Senior politician leaking information is a problem: Madonsela

By Sapa | Aug 28, 2014 | COMMENTS [ 41 ]

The leaking of confidential information by a senior politician is a big problem, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said on Thursday.

"The leaking and publishing of confidential information... is a problem," she told reporters in Pretoria.

But when it was a senior politician, "this is an even bigger problem", she said.

Madonsela said there was "hysteria" after her Nkandla letter to President Jacob Zuma was leaked.

This hysteria was "symptomatic of more underlying problems", she said.

Mandonsela said she was "particularly concerned over statements attributed to officials outside government".

Madonsela reportedly wrote to Zuma last week about the R246 million spent on upgrades at his private Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal.

In her letter she reportedly cautioned him that he was second-guessing her recommendations that he repay part of the money spent on features unrelated to security, such as a swimming pool, cattle kraal, amphitheatre, and visitors' centre.

In his reply to Madonsela's report on Nkandla, Zuma indicated that Police Minister Nathi Nhleko should determine if he should repay any of the money.

Since then, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe has publicly criticised her and suggested she was working with Julius Malema's Economic Freedom Fighters.

NOT IN PUBLIC INTEREST TO LEAK LETTER: THULI

It was not in the public interest to leak to the media her letter to President Jacob Zuma, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said on Thursday.

"Both the leaking and the publishing [of the letter] were improper," Madonsela told reporters in Pretoria.

This action was against public interest because it added to a "climate of mistrust", she said.

In the past, her office had never had "any drama" or lack of co-operation from the president's office.

"Had the letter not been leaked, the president would have graciously considered my letter, as he has always done," said Madonsela.

She would ask for a meeting with Zuma's office to "enable the way forward".

She had been informed that a senior politician had leaked the letter to the media.

Madonsela said she was "particularly concerned over statements attributed to officials outside government".

She said the public protector was an independent constitutional institution established to support and strengthen constitutional democracy.

Mme Thuli; is it not a problem when your office use leaked information in your investigation as evidence? Investigations are irregular themselves Mam because they are normally done in the dark; when everyone is resting.

The "leaks" are false flag incidents committed ZANC spooks and intended to be used as distractions from the actual contents of reports. Its worked for them before but we are wiser now. You have been told the facts now do not forget them. Or else.

Bokker=== Mna my issue is on the principle that Thuli is complaining about. She sees no problem when the leaked info helps her but when it does not; it is a problem – is that not Hypocrisy.

And, Thuli what do you expect the public to do with all the information you are busy publishing. Like you said, in the past you used to write to the president and you will have a private meeting to discuss whatever you felt was not right at that point of time and what brought the change then? You know very well that the president did not personal go into the government coffers and sign/authorise those big cheques for the renovations but somebody did. Thuli you are to trying hard to make everyone happy and its not gonna happen.

If you give your daughter your credit card and ask her to go buy you some socks, you can't then say that you won't pay the credit card bill because she bought you expensive socks .... that you are wearing.

Explain Minenhle, the architect that came up with the structure and design of the Nkandla harem, and who was introduced by Zuma to the Dep of Public Works. Also explain how Zuma flies home in a helicopter every weekend and never bother to ask what is going on at his harem when he sees major renovations taking place.

It is a norm that officials once in a while do leak information, sometimes with good intention-for the good of the country and justice and fairness. The reason why this caused a problem it is because it was against the very same reason that is controversial, so senior ANC members like Mantashe who want to defend Zuma were not happy. The official could have leaked in order to inform citizens before the letter was classified. we know ANC is prone to run for classification. we would have never known about Nkandla, Guptas, Arms deal, Watergate, Travelgate, Zuma's daughter getting a COS position, etc if they were not leaked, this information would have been hidden within the corridors of the parliament. And we must be thankful to those ANC members leaking such information, they do it out of the goodness of their heart.
