Roux says police must wake up

Paralympian Oscar Pistorius's lawyer Barry Roux has lashed out at police inefficiency saying they were to blame for many criminals not being convicted, The Citizen reported on Thursday.

"There's tardiness, they don't take the docket to court -- sometimes they don't take it because they sold it. Or sometimes they don't take it because they have misfiled it," Roux reportedly told law students at the University of Witwatersrand on Wednesday.

He said the biggest problem in South Africa was that people who committed crimes did so knowing "there's a fair chance they won't get caught -- or if arrested, won't get tried".

Roux called on police to "wake up".

He also criticised certain procedures in court that led to delayed justice.

"If justice is delayed long enough people don't show up anymore or simply forget what happened," he said.

Pistorius was charged with murder following the fatal shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He shot her through a locked toilet door at his Pretoria home on Valentine's Day last year. He claimed he mistook her for an intruder.

Judge Thokozile Masipa will hand down judgment in the trial on September 11.

You seem to be confusing the SAPS with the Metro Police.

Yes Mr Roux. Put it to the Minister of police to force them to do their jobs.

Aug 28, 2014 8:35 | 0 replies

Now, Roux, go and speak to one of the 'good' cops out there and see WHY this happens. When the cops work their arses off and have nightmares over the horrors they have witnessed, you legal sods let them down. When cops have to deal with children being raped and judges give the rapist a 'suspended sentence', it must be pretty damn difficult to find motivation to take cases to court.

This isn't just about the police, it is about the entire fugged up justice system! Of which, MR Roux, you are part of.

Am sorry MC, I think you let you emotion blind your opinion there. To start with, you don't go to court without having first the law-enforcement brigade (police) making an arrest of suspected person(s).

MommaC What a load of crap, nobody forced them to be cops - It's what the taxpayer pays them to do. If they can't take the heat they must go back to gardening.

This man is spot on. He is the best defence lawyer, I have ever seen. He will win the case in OP trial, because the cops bungled it up, to make it look like OP is guilty of premed murder.

Whiz, agreed but the judge being female, who knows what irrational, flawed reasoning will prevail. For some irrational reason, woman see the OP trial as a "Violence against woman" issue.

most parliamentarians don't know or understand the constitution, not just the police, the stand off in parliament was a showcase, our politicians sort quick fix 'shoot to kill' to a serious and sustained problem, when a minister uttered these words, it was clear that the constitution was breached or undermined, the reason anc didnt' not challenge this minister means they too don't know shat abt constitution nevermind upholding it.

That may be true Mr. Roux, because you pocketed more than much because of it and you are coming out now. truth has it's own way of coming out. say more, because most of your clients went Scott free. the nicest thing about it all is that you know you've been lying for such criminals.

Guptanistan1, You are clueless. Using your definition and reasoning, anyone hiring a Defense Attorney is a criminal ? You must be a special kind of stupid.

Aug 31, 2014 1:5 | 0 replies

I agree with you Barry on this one,I have observed with dismay in many instances when police just do minimum requirements on the crime scene, just to calm down the victims' families and leave to rest with their families whilst masses of helpless citezens are crying somewhere. The instance of bargaining with the NPA in a case whereby a senior government official was supposed to be put behind bars, taught me something about this"justice"system- there is no justice in most cases. In the same case the IO openenly conived with the NPA official and my abuser,(he was given a warning with conditions-)
