SA and Botswana issue travel bans

Cabinet has issued a travel ban for non-South Africans from Ebola infested countries, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said on Thursday.

He said South Africans coming from such West African countries would be questioned, and medically examined if need be.

This comes after two Ebola scares in the past two weeks involving a pregnant woman and a 37 year-old man who both arrived in Johannesburg from Guinea and Liberia.

They were tested negative.

However, there is a bit of a contradiction as Communications Minister, Faith Muthambi said on Wednesday, that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa is no threat to tourism in South Africa.

"No cases of the Ebola virus have been reported in the country, and government is confident of the systems and protocols that are in place to address any incidence of the virus."

Botswana has also banned international travels for the next 30 days to countries most affected by Ebola including Guinea, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and  Liberia in order to curb the risk of spreading the disease in the country.
