Zoleka Mandela breast cancer battle to be televised

Grandaughter of the late Nelson Mandela, Zoleka Mandela is shooting a documentary on her struggle with breast cancer.

Having faced many issues such as losing two children, public break-ups and drug addiction, Mandela is now facing another tough battle.

However in true fighting spirit, Zoleka has chosen to document everything from the operations to the painful recovery process in an effort to encourage those faced with the same challenges.

In the documentary she will share her highs and lows of living with breast cancer and how she overcomes her condition.

On her Facebook page she thanked her son and partner for taking pictures of her in hospital and capturing her cancer battle for her upcoming film.

“Thanking my son (Zwelami) for the pictures he took and my life partner, Thierry for filming the procedure towards my upcoming documentary film on my journey with breast cancer,” Zoleka wrote.

She posted a few pictures and status on Facebook, after a breast implant procedure.

“It's been almost two weeks since my bilateral second stage breast reconstruction where my breast tissue expanders were finally replaced with breast implants/prosthesis following my bilateral mastectomy.”

Since discovering she has cancer, her grandmother Winnie Mandela has been her greatest pillar of strength.

“I thank my grandmother for holding my hand throughout this painful procedure.”

Zoleka also reiterated the need for women to go for regular testing to increase their chances of beating the disease.

“Early detection saved my life. Breast Cancer changed my life for the better. Onwards and upwards, the journey continues.”

In her documentary she will be sharing her breast implant process, the stages it will take her to finish the implants.

“I will need to return to Milpark Hospital in three months to undergo the third stage of my surgery - nipple reconstruction where they will be removing skin from my stomach to make my new nipples.

“For now, I wait 4mnths for the implants to settle and for the swelling to go down before bra shopping,” she wrote on a status.

Zoleka discovered she had breast cancer in 2012, she fell ill several times and has undergone many procedures but she still stands tall in it all.
