Jordan got doctorate from publication: Report

By Sapa | Aug 14, 2014 | COMMENTS [ 79 ]

Pallo Jordan smilingly attributed his doctorate to the publication "Africa Confidential" according to a conversation from 30 years ago, Beeld reported on Thursday.

In 1986 retired professor and writer Gail Gerhart and his colleague Thomas Karis had lunch with Jordan in Lusaka, Zambia, and asked him where he obtained his doctorate.

"I remember his exact words. 'My doctorate was bestowed on me by Africa Confidential', he said with a big grin. We all laughed about it and the subject changed," said Gerhart.

Africa Confidential is a British publication which has reported on political and economic matters since 1960.

Jordan resigned as an African National Congress MP on Monday and tendered his resignation from the governing party's national executive committee, as well as his membership from the party itself after a Sunday Times report that he did not have a doctorate nor other qualifications associated with him.

Professor Stephen Ellis, editor of Africa Confidential from 1986 to 1991, could not remember writing about Jordan not having a degree, but he had been aware of it for a long time.

He assumed the publication incorrectly attributed the doctorate at a time before he was editor and that Jordan had "liked it" and started using it.

Pablo had to be friends with 'whites'. With a surname like Picasso, it was only logical

Aug 14, 2014 11:14 | 1 replies

Pablo has never earned my respect as a black person and this FAKE qualification its not a surprise to my ear, remember i told you i can smell a white influenced person from miles away.

Aug 14, 2014 11:45 | 1 replies

I didn't particularly understand his paintings but I don't think he gave a rat's furry arse about your 'respect'. From photos of him, he seemed pretty 'white' to me.

Aug 14, 2014 11:50 | 1 replies

From photos of him I just see "white" confused old dog

Aug 14, 2014 11:58 | 1 replies

Considering how strange his paintings were, I recon he was dipping into some strong hallucinogenics.

(I wonder how long it is going to take for him to click?)

Aug 14, 2014 12:7 | 0 replies

#Pelo, truly speaking Jordan was naive to make such big claim , for 20 yrs his dissertation was wanted for referral , what was he thinking , you cant lie with such production its for public , this guy was selfish just because he was a Minister nobody could pressuries him to publicise his work on book shelves, no guys no , students studying Communications Masters, Hons etc could find his article , was that not sabotage for our Researchers

Aug 14, 2014 11:21 | 2 replies

Dr Irvin Khosa, Dr Jordaan, Dr Malope, soon Zuma will be a DR

Aug 14, 2014 11:23 | 2 replies

I think some ejit already gave Zuma an honorary doctorate. Khosa has never claimed to have earned his doctorate. It was always known that it was an honorary one (so he really shouldn't use the honorific). This is more about the lie than the degree

Aug 14, 2014 11:48 | 1 replies

The article and your question don't tie up.

Aug 14, 2014 11:51 | 1 replies

MommaC==== don’t sit and wait like a traffic cop naked lady. It was just a pun aimed at this hilarious comment from these two; Gail Gerhart and his colleague Thomas Karis. They seem to be enjoying this. Just have a look at this extract: - “He assumed the publication incorrectly attributed the doctorate at a time before he was editor and that Jordan had "liked it" and started using it.” These guys are laughing all the way I say

Aug 14, 2014 12:12 | 1 replies

Try reading the article again. The laughing was when they were with Jordan. ...... Oh, and that isn't me in the picture, it is a wonderful pinup girl from the 1950s by the name of Bettie Page.

Aug 14, 2014 1:18 | 1 replies

You take long to comprehend naked lady – perhaps you need to stop looking for mistakes in every comment. At the end of the day, the whole article is about poking a pun at Jordan for liking the word and using it – that is my point.

Aug 14, 2014 1:37 | 1 replies

You really do read an awful lot into nothing. I bet you think the birds are skinnering about you every morning.

Aug 14, 2014 1:50 | 1 replies

Once again, your thoughts, not mine. You think it; it’s yours naked lady. Dont pass the bug.

It is soo broing and un-befitting for Doctorates to be given just as a packet of Common-Sweets (for real Dr Rebecca Malope, Dr Malibongwe, Dr Lusanda etc. Universities must stop lowering our education standards by just giving away Doctorates. They don't come easily:the proposal,Research, the Thesis all is not child's play. If Universities have no Doctorate graduates they just confer these Honorary Doctorates. The Rebeccas have no claim to be called Doctor, they did not work for it. She is still Ms Rebecca Malope, but she is crazy to claim Dr Malope.

After making and passing so many laws as a parliamentarian! No wonder the justice system seems suspect on many occasions. What with imitation legislators like that. To think I’ve been in awe of this man for so long. It's only fitting that he be made an ambassador in Hong Kong coz he’s *ong Kong. (I’m kidding, I take that back, that's just low). Hind sight though is a beautiful thing. Now looking at this man's picture I can see this chap can’t be a doctor, I mean seriously, look at him. Well, it turns out he's not! (I take that back too!!)

Aug 14, 2014 11:29 | 0 replies

Some of us are not suprised by this, we knew dark or blue that a way of justifying lies will come up, how do you accept something that you know that you do not deserve. Anyway he is a cadre they will justify it at all angles

Aug 14, 2014 11:35 | 0 replies

Sadly, employers in South Africa and around the world do not accept South African education qualifications anymore, so Dr.Jordan may as well continue using his Doctorate title to help his feelings of inferiority. It makes no difference.

Aug 14, 2014 11:37 | 1 replies

Most of our tertiary qualifications are still recognised in other countries. Despite the problems our universities have, the end results are surprisingly good (in most subjects).

Aug 14, 2014 11:45 | 1 replies

I understand (correct me if I am wrong) that certain faculties only at UCT and Stellenbosch are accepted in only certain countries, subject to at least one year's "reorientation" course being passed in that country.

Aug 14, 2014 11:54 | 2 replies

Could you explain to me, how come a person goes for studies abroad to complete his/her studies on record time whereas its known fact its impossible to do that at home eg MBA cant be be completed on three yrs or Masters on one yr, must we take this serious cause we often find these people are given more priority over local graduates when it comes to interviews, they will tell you s/he has foreign qualifications

Aug 14, 2014 12:6 | 3 replies

An MBA is normally one year, some are 2, most part time are 2yrs

Aug 14, 2014 12:17 | 0 replies

Oh for goodness sakes, Dandan! Enough with this lie about a Masters not being done in one year in South Africa! It is done here too!

Aug 14, 2014 1:22 | 0 replies

Oh, and:
As a part time student, taking one course per study period, you can typically complete your 12 course MBA in 3 years or 1.5 years as a full time student.

Not everyone is as slow at learning as you are!

Aug 14, 2014 1:25 | 0 replies

Imfene, It depends on the degree you do. Certain degrees (law, medicine, engineering etc) have always been subjected to writing the 'board exam' if you go to other countries and, yes, you are given a year in which to do so. That practice has been around since before I was born.

Aug 14, 2014 1:21 | 1 replies

You sound so sensitive as if you know few with these so called foreign papers, and it sound like you are running away from what Im trying to justify , are you telling me all SAfricans going abroad are so brilliant cant afford to fail one single module , stop the f.u.c.k of yourself maaaan, Its known fact foreign students are pushed out in avoiding Visas costs, and other expenses, yet you are so stupid to blame Angie about 30% very quick to recognise foreign worthless paper

Aug 14, 2014 2:8 | 1 replies

DAFUQ are you on about now? Universities don't 'push out' failures because it would affect their credibility. If you don't know that credibility is EVERYTHING in academia, then you know nothing. The entire university rating is based on the quality of their graduates. No university is going to jeopardise that simply because the student needs to renew a visa! The university doesn't give a shiit about what their visa costs!
