Nelson Mandela Metro ward councillor Buyisile Mkavu was a young, dynamic and vibrant politician, Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Benson Fihla said on Sunday.

"It is with great sadness that we received the horrific news that Comrade Buyisile Mkavu...met his untimely demise when he was cold-heartedly gunned down last night," Fihla said in a statement on Sunday.

Mkavu was shot dead in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage, on Saturday night.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei said someone approached his vehicle from the passenger side and fired a shot through an open window at Mkavu's upper body.

Mkavu died at the scene of the shooting on Mlawu Street, Angola section, just after 9pm.

Fihla sent his condolences to Mkavu's family.

"We share the pain of his wife Limise, his friends, family, colleagues and the broader Nelson Mandela Bay populace," he said.

He said Mkavu previously served as a leader in the ANC Youth League and as whip of the human settlements committee.

He also led a task team to intervene in violence in Motherwell, according to a previous statement by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

"He also spearheaded the inclusion of developments in Despatch and Uitenhage to ensure that more projects are included in the 7-year housing turnaround strategy and strongly believed in improving communication channels with the community," said Fihla.

The motive of Mkavu's shooting was not known and no arrests have been made.

"I call on the South African Police Services to bring the culprit or culprits to book," said Fihla.
