Selebi costs yet to determined: Phiyega

The process to determine how much fraud-convicted former police chief Jackie Selebi owed the taxpayer in legal bills was at an "advanced" stage, national police commissioner Riah Phiyega said on Monday.

Phiyega was responding to a statement by the Freedom Front Plus during the police budget vote in Parliament.

The party's Pieter Groenewald said it would be submitting a complaint to the Public Protector regarding Selebi's outstanding debt.

Phiyega said the determination of how much Selebi owed the state is a complex one.

"First, we had to determine the... total costs of that entire action of which a more in depth assessment needed to be made because the principle there is that if you win your case, costs are defrayed and most of you are aware that its been a mixed bag.

"There are areas where there's been winning. There's areas where there's been losses, so that process took some time," Phiyega said.

"Once that is done, you then need to allow the lawyers of the person in question... to respond to what is represented before them."

The matter would then be referred to Phiyega for a decision.

"I can say to you that matter is very advanced. We shall in the near future make that decision."

Selebi was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2010 for taking bribes from drug dealer Glen Agliotti.

He was released on medical parole in 2012 after he was diagnosed with kidney failure, hypertension and diabetes.
