Tutu calls for Israel, Palestine peace

By Sapa | 2014-07-10 06:59:47.0 | COMMENTS [ 32 ]

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu on Wednesday urged citizens of both Palestine and Israel to stand up and say enough is enough.

"Once again, the people of Israel and Palestine are embroiled in a deadly contest of tit-for-tat violence in which there can never be victors, only losers," Tutu said in a statement.

"Like children following a playground dust-up, political and religious leaders fall over each other, not to make peace, but to proclaim: It wasn't us, they started it."

He said Israel would never achieve true security and safety through oppressing the Palestinians, and Palestine would never achieve peaceful self-determination through violence.

"No conflict is intractable; no disagreement so absolute that it can never be healed.

"The world is looking to Israelis and Palestinians to be bigger than themselves; to act now, before any more children are harmed," said Tutu.

Scores of people have died during two days of Gaza raids.

According to Agence France-Presse, 11 women and children were among 17 Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes on Wednesday.

This brought the death toll to 38 in two days, according to the report.

More than 300 people have been wounded.

Very true Robs, take religion out of the equation, and WALLA!!! everyone starts to live alongside each other in harmony. Another problem is the hawks on both sides. The ruling Nentanyau's right wing party, and Hamas on the other side, will never achieve peace because they dont want to. It is left to the ordinary people on both sides, to institute change by revolutionary means

Keep lying to yourself. My mother used to say people who lie to themselves dont like themselves very much. You keep praying non-existent god, whilst people still suffer the world over because of your stupid religion

To me, the eternal conflict between these two peoples boils down to a religious conflict. The territorial issues are simply a tangible by-product. Proof that the greatest conflicts on earth are the result of religious intolerance.

There will be no peace in that area as long as the USA keeps bankrolloing the Zionist State ($3 billion a year), and Israel being the 'eye of the west' in that region. Annoyingly, the zionists must know that they are cannon-fodder for the USA, and Hamas are also being abused by the likes of Hezbollah. The people (palestinians & israelis) need to look beyond their leadership, and take matters into their own hands, depose all in power and form a new Palestine. Jews are arabs, just as Palestinians are. They are brothers for eternity, having lived and fought side by side to quell all invading armies (sometimes unsuccessfully) throughout history. Tutu should form a Task Force, comprising of most world peace leaders and head to Palestine, and sort this once and for all.

skwamasamabele1 - For how many decades has this been going on? There will never be peace in Isreal. All we need to do now is wait for the f***ers to bomb each other out of existence.

Jews are not Arabs my brother but I agree the US involvement is central to the conflict and it is their support for the state of Israel that keep the conflict ongoing. Israel is now using drones the destroy houses.

Make no mistake about this Robin, the conflict is about land and has always been about land since 1948. I often get frustrated by Hamas for fuelling the conflict but Israel are still the main protagonists and have placed Palestinian people in virtual communal prisons and using safety of Israel as an excuse. There will never be peace so long as Israel continues to build settlements, settlements that make it even more difficult to reach a settlement. The US also shoulders massive blame for its financial and military support of apartheid Israel, when Israel steps over the line the US is always ready to block any resolution that may come from the UN Security Council. There can never be a negotiated settlement in the Palestine conflict; the only solution in my view would be a unilateral declaration of Palestine as a state and then take it from there seeking to recoup land taken after 1967. We must never forget that the State of Israel and the State of Palestine were created by the same UN Resolution though the Palestine state was never declared largely due to the 1948 conflict.

The deafening silence of the British govt is astonishing. They caused this mess, and now they are holding it at arms' length. They should be held directly responsible for all this fiasco.

Yah I hear your point but I think we would be going back too far if we went back to the days of the Ottomans Empire. Personally I prefer starting in 1948 where we have a clear document stating who is supposed to occupy what and then track what happened since with Israel declared a state and then war breaking out soon thereafter. To be realistic though 1967 borders should be the foundation of any settlement reached. I don't like the fact that an impartial US is trying to resolve the conflict; the UN and the world must grow some balls and sort this out once and for all. Another thing that needs to be addressed in the UN Security Council and its post WWII composition that is making peace in the 21st Century hard to secure as genuine and needed resolutions can be vetoed at will. The UN should not be a passive observer, in my view that is where solutions should lie.

With respect, the conflict began when Moses marched his people into the so-called "promised land" and chased others out. 1948 was several thousand years later. The current "states" are ALL artificial.

Robin you must know that there is no proof of Moses ever leading anyone across the sea, right. World Decisions cannot be made based on half-baked fiction my friend. Even the existance of King David of the Star of David fame cannt be proved, the is no proof of a King David who was supposed to have lived when the bilbe claim he lived. Part of the problem is we are using a lie to seek answers.

Hey Man, obviously I am not speaking literally. The point is that there has been conflict in that region since the beginning of recorded history. By now you should know I am not into the bible or religion.
