Gauteng ANC premier choices decided

The Gauteng provincial executive committee (PEC) of the African National Congress has decided on three candidates for premier but their names have not been disclosed, the party said on Thursday.

Provincial spokesman Nkenke Kekana said in a statement that alliance partners the Congress of SA Trade Unions, SA National Civic Organisation and the SA Communist Party endorsed the three preferred candidates.

"Speculation and misinformation in the media and the public discourse make it necessary for us to clarify to the public the process of premier selection in the ANC," he said.

"The PEC is not under any obligation to make the three selected names public before the national executive committee has made a final decision."

It was reported on Wednesday that previous premier Nomvula Mokonyane was overlooked in the preferred list in favour of provincial secretary David Makhura, prior education MEC Barbara Creecy and prior finance MEC Mandla Nkomfe.

Kekana said Wednesday's PEC meeting discussed Nkomfe's request to have his name removed from the list of candidates for the 2014 legislature.

"Cde Nkomfe who has served in the legislature since 1999 has taken the decision to serve the ANC in other capacities, namely research and academia -- and other roles other than the parliamentary processes," Kekana said.

Nkomfe would remain a PEC member.
