Almost nine hours after the voting stations closed in the fifth democratic election in South Africa, over 20 percent of the votes had been counted on Thursday morning.
At 5.45am, 23.33 percent of votes had been counted and the African National Congress had 1,592,714 votes, the Democratic Alliance 850,186, the Economic Freedom Fighters 110,790 and the United Democratic Movement had 27,337 votes.
The Freedom Front Plus had 35,251, the Congress of the People 22,355, the Inkatha Freedom Party 55,510, Agang SA 6376 and the National Freedom Party had 38,150 votes.
The Workers Socialist Party had 1343 votes, the African Christian Democratic Party 19,175, the African Independent Congress 15,637 and the African Peoples Convention had 4898 votes.
Al Jama-Ah had 6066 votes, Azanian Peoples Organisation 2810, Bushbuckridge Residents Association 1556, First Nation Liberation Alliance 652, and Front National 920.
The Independent Civic Organisation of SA had 5638 votes, Keep It Straight and Simple 594, Kingdom Governance Movement 1060, Minority Front 1498 and Pan Africanist Congress of Azania 4745 votes.
The Pan Africanist Movement had 619 votes, Patriotic Alliance 4633, Peoples Alliance 327, the Ubuntu Party 1397, United Christian Democratic Party 2334 and United Congress 512.
Political party representatives started arriving again at the IEC results centre in Pretoria at 6am.
Mpumalanga
Just over a quarter of votes cast in Mpumalanga's provincial election had been counted by 5am on Thursday.
Of the province's 1678 voting districts, 444 had been counted, accounting for 266,596 valid votes and 3767 spoilt votes.
The early results recorded that the African National Congress secured 194,525 votes (72.97 percent), the Democratic Alliance 42,996 (16.13 percent), the Economic Freedom Fighters 15,475 (5.8 percent) and the Freedom Front Plus 3423 (1.28 percent).
The National Freedom Party had 2534 votes (0.95 percent), the Bushbuckridge Residents Association 1587 (0.6 percent), the African People's Convention 1439 (0.54 percent), and the African Christian Democratic Party 1228 (0.46 percent).
The Congress of the People had 1112 votes (0.42 percent), the Inkatha Freedom Party 585 (0.22 percent), the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania 432 (0.16 percent), the United Democratic Movement 295 (0.11 percent) and Agang SA 290 (0.11 percent).
The Sindawonye Progressive Party had 285 votes (0.11 percent), the Azanian People's Organisation 228 (0.09 percent) and the United Christian Democratic Party 162 (0.06 percent).
Western Cape
Early election results in the Western Cape show the Democratic Alliance had 453,461 votes by 5am on Thursday.
The Freedom Front Plus had 4404 votes, the African Christian Democratic Party had 7982 votes, African Independent Congress had 2176 votes and the African National Congress had 162,036 votes.
The African National Party had 358 votes, the African Peoples Convention 437, Agang SA 2076, Al Jama-Ah 5369, Azanian Peoples Organisation 256, Congress of the People 3371, the Economic Freedom Fighters 8454 and the First Nation Liberation Alliance had 267 votes.
The Independent Civic Organisation of SA had 4896 votes, the Indigenous Peoples Organisation 428, the Inkatha Freedom Party 421, the Kingdom Governance Movement 120, the National Freedom Party 230 and the National Party SA had 1103 votes.
The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania had 659 votes, the Patriotic Alliance 3860, the People's Alliance 145, the Sibanye Civic Association 110, the SA Progressive Civic Organisation 314, the United Christian Democratic Party 437, and the United Democratic Movement had 1681 votes.
Eastern Cape
Early election results in the Eastern Cape show that the African National Congress had 370,716 votes by 5.30am on Thursday.
The Freedom Front Plus had 1855, the African Christian Democratic Party 1394, the African Independent Congress 4177, the African Peoples Convention 1309, and Agang SA had 463 votes.
The Azanian Peoples Organisation had 568 votes, Congress of the People 5528, the Democratic Alliance 75,030 and the Economic Freedom Fighters had 13,821 votes.
The Inkatha Freedom Party secured 323 votes, the Kingdom Governance Movement 679, the National Freedom Party 568, and Pan Africanist Congress of Azania 1861 votes.
The Patriotic Movement of SA had 133 votes, the United Christian Democratic Party 259, the United Congress 231, and the United Democratic Movement had 19,506 votes.
Limpopo
Almost nine percent of votes cast in Limpopo's provincial election had been counted just before 5am on Thursday.
Of the province's 3066 voting districts, 271 had been counted, accounting for 90,730 valid votes and 996 spoilt votes.
The early results record the African National Congress having 66,950 votes, the Democratic Alliance 9959, the Economic Freedom Fighters 8624 and the Freedom Front Plus 2110.
The Congress of the People had 773 votes, the Azanian People's Organisation 473, the African Christian Democratic Party 377, the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania 219, and the African People's Convention 206.
Agang SA secured 200 votes, the United Democratic Movement 177, Lekgotla 164, the Workers and Socialist Party 158, and Ximoko Party 129.
With less than a hundred votes so far were the Inkatha Freedom Party with 54, the SA Maintenance and Estate Beneficiaries Association 48, the United Christian Democratic Party 47, the National Freedom Party 30, the Unemployment Movement SA with 22, and the Merafong Civic Association with 10.
Free State
By 3.30am on Thursday, 12.28 percent of votes in the Free State's provincial election had been counted.
Of the province's 1523 voting districts, votes from 187 had been counted, accounting for 57,679 valid votes and 808 spoilt votes.
The African National Congress secured 36,701 votes in the early results, the Democratic Alliance 12,925, the Economic Freedom Fighters 4326, the Freedom Front Plus 1793 and the Congress of the People 772.
The African Christian Democratic Party had 339 votes, the African People's Convention 157, the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania 121, Agang SA 120, the Azanian People's Organisation 107, and the United Democratic Movement 98.
The Inkatha Freedom Party had 81 votes, the United Christian Democratic Party 48, the Patriotic Alliance 41, the National Freedom Party 37 and the Independent Civic Organisation of SA had 13.
KwaZulu-Natal
Just over 12 percent of votes in KwaZulu-Natal's provincial election had been counted by 4am on Thursday.
Of the province's 4746 voting districts, 584 had been counted, accounting for 252,732 valid votes and 3517 spoilt votes.
Early results in the province recorded the African National Congress had received 158,365 votes, the Democratic Alliance 38,678, the Inkatha Freedom Party 27,264, the National Freedom Party 18,885 and the Economic Freedom Fighters 3644.
Minority Front had 1327 votes, the African Christian Democratic Party 1169, the Freedom Front Plus 755, the United Democratic Movement 592, the African People's Convention 559 and the Congress of the People 322.
The Azanian People's Organisation had 264 votes, the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania 223, the KwaZulu-Natal Transport Alliance 197, the Kingdom Governance Movement 152 , and the United Christian Democratic Party 152.
The Truly Alliance had 128 votes, while Ubumbano Lwesizwe Sabangoni had 56.
Gauteng
Early results from Gauteng showed that the Democratic Alliance had 24,338 votes and the African National Congress had 36,331 votes at 3.20am on Thursday morning.
The Freedom Front Plus had 1946 votes, the Workers Socialist Party 19, African Christian Democratic Party 374, the African Peoples Convention 104 and Agang SA 169.
The Azanian Peoples Organisation had 89 votes, the Congress of the People 320, Economic Freedom Fighters 5982, Front National 59 and the Independent Civic Organisation of SA had 24 votes.
The Inkatha Freedom Party had 429 votes, the Kingdom Governance Movement 13, Lekgotla for Democracy Advancement six, Merafong Civic Association nine, Minority Front 13, and the National Freedom Party 237.
The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania had 134 votes, the Patriotic Alliance 17, the United Christian Democratic Party 64, and the United Democratic Movement 606.
Northern Cape
Forty percent of votes in the Northern Cape's provincial election had been counted by 4.30am on Thursday.
Of the province's 694 voting districts, 280 had been counted, accounting for 76,554 valid votes and 1119 spoilt votes.
The early results showed the African National Congress had secured 46,268 votes, the Democratic Alliance 21,615, the Economic Freedom Fighters 3095, the Congress of the People 2611, and the Freedom Front Plus 1489.
The African Christian Democratic Party had 592 votes, the African People's Convention 255, the United Christian Democratic Party 138, the Azanian People's Organisation 132, and the Patriotic Alliance 116.
With less than a hundred votes each were the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania with 63, the United Democratic Movement 48, the Independent Civic Organisation of SA 45, the Inkatha Freedom Party 36, First Nation Liberation Alliance 29, and the National Freedom Party 22.
