An elderly man was the first to cast his vote in Alexandra township in Johannesburg as general elections started countrywide on Wednesday.

Musa Phakati, 71, arrived at the voting station at a preschool in Eighth Avenue at 5.30am.

He said he was so excited about voting again that he could not sleep. He left his home at 4.30am and slowly walked to the voting station.

But he was concerned that he saw mainly older people in the queue.

"I don't see any young people here. I hope they come and vote and don't go party first. They should come here first and go party after voting," said Phakati.

A queue of about 200 people had formed outside the gate by 7am.
