From ANC to EFF

With the upcoming election, voters are following the lead of politicians and defecting to other parties, with EFF luring a large number of voters from the ANC, according to the Sowetan LIVE Facebook poll.

This comes after the initial story on Sowetan LIVE, which reported that the EFF is luring black voters from DA.

Sowetan LIVE readers were asked “If you have changed your mind about the party you have voted for previously, what party are you voting for now? In your comment, please type it out like this eg. From DA to EFF..”

A number of high-profile defections have recently taken place, including Grant Pascoe who left the DA for ANC, the sixty-six African National Congress members in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, who defected to the National Freedom Party, as well as the Agang SA dissidents who joined EFF.

Out of 1,944 comments, 583 were changing their votes from ANC to EFF.

As the new kid on the block, and with its considerable hype and support, EFF still managed to get 10 unhappy voters who were changing their votes to ANC.

Fellow newcomer AgangSA managed to lure 9 votes from ANC.

The ruling party’s other competitors were also reflected in the poll. ANC to DA votes amounted to 40, with DA to ANC votes were 11. COPE and ANC neck and neck, getting 2 votes from either side.

The EFF also managed to get supporters from other opposition parties such as DA – 16, COPE – 20 and PAC– 4. Six ANC voters were voting for UDM.

The rest of the votes, while not answering the question, were an indication of the upcoming vote among Sowetan LIVE readers. These voters confirmed their votes and the parties they support.

The ANC came out on top with 419 with the majority stating that they were lifelong supporters.

New voters and those dissatisfied with the ruling party voted for EFF (280), like Vincent Sibusiso “EFF , i will be voting for the first time”. Other parties’ votes were DA – 40, UDM - 5, AGANG – 3 and COPE – 4.

There were also a large amount of voters who were uncertain about their vote, and chose to abstain or said they would spoil their ballot, like Lebo Mphakathi who said “No 1 is getting my vote”.

Many also said that they would not disclose their vote because “my vote is my secret”. These votes combined amounted to 100.
