Northern Cape man held for killing family with axe

A man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly killing two of his family members and injuring two others with an axe in Douglas, Northern Cape police said.

The 53-year-old man was spotted by a worker from a nearby golf course around 1.20pm, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.

The worker then contacted the police, who found the man lying in bushes, and arrested him.

He allegedly killed his 40-year-old sister and his 19-year-old nephew with an axe on March 5.

His 80-year-old mother and 17-year-old niece where also injured in the incident.

"They were both taken to hospital at the time but have since been discharged," said Naidu.

The man, who stayed with all four family members, had been at large since the incident.

He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for dehydration, but would be transported to Kimberley for further treatment, said Naidu.

He would appear in the Douglas Magistrate's Court soon.
