Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the woman suffered a head wound and was dead when paramedics arrived. Her husband was still alive, but died of his wounds on the scene.

Zwane said the robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash, a cellphone and a firearm. They fled in a Toyota RunX, which was later found abandoned in Cottonfields, near Verulam.

Police are investigating a case of robbery with aggravating circumstances and two counts of murder. No arrests had been made.
