A 44-year-old man killed his girlfriend and four children in Tlou village, Ga-Matlala, Limpopo police said on Sunday.
The 34-year-old woman and four children, aged between two months and five-years, were found with open wounds to their necks on Sunday morning, said Colonel Ronel Otto.
She said it was not known whose children they were.
The man was found unconscious, and was now under police guard in Knobel hospital. He was thought to have tried to commit suicide by taking poison, said Otto.
Police were investigating.
