'Black middle class growing rapidly'

The black middle class has grown from 350,000 individuals in 1993 to almost three million last year, according to a University of Stellenbosch study quoted in The Star on Thursday.

"While there is certainly room for improvement, data on the incomes and characteristics of South African households suggests that we are making steady progress," said professor Hennie Kotze, research fellow at the Centre for International and Comparative Politics at Stellenbosch University.

The study was conducted by university researchers over two years to look into South Africa's current socio-economic climate.

It showed that the black middle class was growing rapidly and that racial inequality had declined dramatically.
