Blue flags for Eastern Cape beaches

"For a beach to get a Blue Flag status it has to follow strict guidelines and put systems in a place to make sure that the beach commits to environmental management, water quality improvement, safety and security," said Williams.

Two beaches in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality in Port Elizabeth received Blue Flag certificates on Tuesday, the municipality said.

Kings Beach and Humewood received the certificates at an event that was held in Durban on Tuesday, said municipal spokesman Roland Williams.

"For a beach to get a Blue Flag status it has to follow strict guidelines and put systems in a place to make sure that the beach commits to environmental management, water quality improvement, safety and security," said Williams.

The Blue Flags award was a victory for the economy of the city as it would attract more tourists to the "Friendly City" to experience warm and safe beaches, he said.
