A 16-year-old high school pupil was stabbed to death during a fight with a fellow pupil at Kgothalang High School in Bekkersdal, Randfontein, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.
"It is alleged that the fight started in the classroom when the suspect threw an umbrella on the wall and its pieces ricocheted back and hit the victim," Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said.
"An argument erupted leading to both scholars taking out knives and fighting."
Mogale said the 16-year-old was stabbed several times and was declared dead on the scene on Monday afternoon.
The pupil who allegedly stabbed him fled the scene after the incident and was still at large.
A murder docket was opened.
