Robbed Guptas not related to prominent family

The Gupta family whose house was broken into in Houghton is not related to the owners of The New Age newspaper, Sapa confirmed.

A case of house robbery was opened by Varsha Gupta on Thursday after goods were stolen.

A domestic worker was arrested.

On Thursday, Gauteng police spokesman Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the Gupta home which was broken into belonged to the prominent family.

Goods of more than R1 million were stolen.

But the prominent family denied that their family home had been robbed.

"The Sowetan today [Thursday] reported a house robbery at a family home of the Guptas in Houghton. The report is erroneous," Gupta family spokesman Gary Naidoo said in an e-mail to Sapa.

"The family can categorically state that none of their properties were robbed."

However, Dlamini insisted the newspaper report was correct.

"I am not going to say anything against what they are saying, but there was a robbery at the property that belonged to the Guptas in Houghton," he said at the time.

On Friday, Dlamini confirmed that the case was opened by Varsha Gupta but said he did not know what the relationship between the two families was.

"I don't know the relationship between them," he told Sapa.

"The statement that we took was from one of the Guptas."
