By Sikho Ntshobane | Jun 11, 2013 | COMMENTS [ 51 ]

WHILE the world prays for former president Nelson Mandela's quick recovery in hospital, villagers in his birthplace of Qunu near Mthatha, Eastern Cape, are not leaving anything to chance.

Some of the residents are preparing to turn their homes into home-stay accommodation as they said there might not be enough accommodation in their village for visitors should the statesman die.

Blackjesu, exactly. He's going to die, like all of us, and it is the way things work in life. If AVTJOP and other insurance firms can make money out of death, then why not them villagers too? I'd be disappointed if they did not take the opportunity.

I read it somewhere that when Shaka Zulu died, all Zulus were asked to shave their heads. That is why I posed a question.

Hehe kuthiwa when Shaka's mom passed away, he declared, "no farming/no sex for a whole year" Whoever fell pregnant within that year was killed, (that is if the history books/doccies are accurate".

What people don't understand is that death is a natural phenomenon. Yes we might wish it not to happen to a person we love but unfortunately it is part of life. Just like taking a funeral plan and making a will, there is absolutely nothing wrong with people renting the places when the unfortunate eventuality of Mandela's death takes place. Even government itself, should have preparations in place for this eventuality, just like what governments do all over the world. Even the pope's death is prepared for long before its time.

Unfortunately death is a big business. Funeral plans, funeral parlours, etc make a lot of money from us everyday, so why shouldn't Qunu residents not?

It actually makes sense. If Mandela dies, it will be the same as if we are hosting the world cup again. Everybody will be here. If people want to make money, why not?

Just out of curiosity: Will we all be asked to shave our heads when Mandela dies?

Voetzek: I know perfectly well what a loafer is. Unfortunately, though, you wrote "loofa". So who's the fool? Go to Word and type in :loofa" and see what you get. Twit.
