HEADLINE act Jill Scott came onto the stage wearing a knee-length black skirt, floral shirt with a black camisole flaunting her cleavage, killer heels and nerdy glasses, which she later took off.

Throughout her performance at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival she kept telling stories of heartbreak, betrayal by loved ones, friends who choose to date their friends' men, but ended her story with a tale of happiness and being content

"Every song comes from a portion of my experiences," she said at the post-event press conference yesterday.

She says she is a big music lover and that inspires her.

"But I hate boxes, and though some call my sound soul I call it music."

Scott's 10-piece band included three male backing vocalists called The Pipes, who shared her electrifying performance.

On her love of words, which is evident in her music, Scott said: "I don' t rule out the possibility of writing a book, but it's work in progress. When I write I'm not writing at microwave pace, but wood pace, which takes time. "

She added that riding her son to school on her bike is one of her greatest pleasures and is a form of relaxation for her.

She confirmed that all her previously cancelled shows to SA were about payments not coming through on time.

"I travel with a 23-member entourage and there' s no way I can pay for so many people." She also shared her love for Africa and surprised many when she greeted them in Set swana, which she learnt on set a few years ago in Botswana. - motaud@sowetan.co.za
